MYP framework guide

MYP assessment criteria A–D

Every MYP subject group assesses four criteria, each marked on the same 0–8 scale against published rubric strands — not percentages. Criterion-related assessment means a student’s work is compared with the descriptors, not with other students.

The shared achievement scale

1–2

Limited

Work of a limited quality; knowledge and skills are beginning to emerge.

3–4

Adequate

Work of an adequate quality; demonstrates some knowledge and skill.

5–6

Substantial

Consistent, competent work that meets most expectations.

7–8

Excellent

High-quality, insightful work that shows sophisticated understanding.

AKnowing and understanding

Students develop scientific knowledge and apply it to solve problems set in familiar and unfamiliar situations, and analyse information to make scientifically supported judgements.

BInquiring and designing

Students explain a problem or question to be tested, formulate a testable hypothesis, and design safe investigations that manipulate variables and collect reliable data.

CProcessing and evaluating

Students collect, transform and present data, interpret results against their hypothesis, evaluate the validity of the method and suggest improvements.

DReflecting on the impacts of science

Students explain how science is used to address real-world problems, discuss the implications of scientific solutions, and use scientific language and modes of communication.

AAnalysing

Students analyse the content, context, language, structure and style of texts, and the effects of the creator's choices on an audience, and justify opinions with examples.

BOrganizing

Students organise their work using structures appropriate to the task, sequence ideas logically, and reference sources in a way that fits the purpose and context.

CProducing text

Students produce texts that demonstrate insight, imagination and critical engagement, make stylistic choices, and select relevant details to develop ideas.

DUsing language

Students use appropriate and varied vocabulary, sentence structures and forms of expression, write and speak accurately and effectively, and communicate with a clear voice.

AKnowing and understanding

Students select appropriate mathematics, apply it successfully in familiar and unfamiliar situations, and solve problems correctly using a range of strategies.

BInvestigating patterns

Students select and apply problem-solving techniques to discover patterns, describe them as relationships or general rules, and prove or justify them.

CCommunicating

Students use appropriate mathematical language, notation and forms of representation, organise information logically, and communicate complete and coherent lines of reasoning.

DApplying mathematics in real-life contexts

Students identify relevant elements of authentic situations, select appropriate strategies, apply them successfully, and reflect on whether the solution makes sense.
