Design brief
A short statement of the problem, the user and what the solution has to do.
A brief for a shade structure names the users, the place and the conditions it must survive.

The testable success criteria a solution must meet.
"The stand must hold a 2 kg tablet for 10 minutes without tipping" can be tested.

Improving a design by testing it, learning from the result and changing it.
Version 2 of the prototype used a wider base after the tipping test failed.
