From sunlight to weather
Weather begins with uneven heating. The Sun warms the equator more strongly than the poles, and land more quickly than water. Warm air expands, becomes less dense and rises, creating low pressure; cooler dense air sinks, creating high pressure. Air flows from high to low pressure — that flow is wind.
Air masses and fronts
A large body of air with similar temperature and humidity is an air mass. Where two air masses meet, a front forms. Warm air forced upward cools, water vapour condenses, and clouds or rain can result.

Weather and climate
Weather is the state of the atmosphere over hours or days. Climate is the pattern of weather over decades. Qatar's climate — hot summers, mild winters, very low rainfall — is set by its subtropical latitude, sinking air and the warm shallow Gulf.

The shamal is a strong north-westerly wind that follows a cold front over Iraq and can raise dust across the whole Gulf for days.
